Our co-produced Payment Policy is finally here!

October 24, 2022

It’s taken many iterations, a lot of heart felt discussions and input from many people involved in our community over several years, but we are pleased to say our co-produced Payment Policy is finally ready to share with you! Please have a read and let us know what you think.

The policy is for anyone who co-produces with Co-Production Collective. It explains who we can offer payment to, in what circumstances; rates and methods of payment; and information about expenses. It also signposts to further resources and support.

We also have the following versions of the policy available to download from this Google Drive folder:

  • A screen reader friendly version - as a Word document and as a PDF document.
  • A large font version - as a Word document
  • An audio version - as a MP3 file
  • Versions of the Interactive summary in Braille, EPUB, DAISY, MOBI

If you would like a different format or another version of Braille not listed please ask us, we will happily send this to you - you can contact us via email on coproduction@ucl.ac.uk.

What has it taken to get here?

Well, we began discussing payment in co-production right back at the start during our early days in 2017! Then at the launch of the Co-Production Collective in October 2020 we announced that we felt it was time for us to co-produce our own payment policy! A draft policy was put together and shared in December 2020 which had a huge response and led to two co-creation sessions in May 2021 where some of the more complicated issues were worked through together. Further drafts were then shared and fed back on, and these led to the payment policy you see today.

From all of this work we have endeavoured to create a policy which at its heart has a flexible and person-centred approach. One that reflects our core values and recognises how much we all benefit from a community made up of co-producers with different circumstances, backgrounds and experiences.

We appreciate that accepting payment may not always be comfortable or the right thing for everyone, so if you have any questions about the policy or anything that arises from it, please get in touch and we will do our best to support you. Aside from payment we are also looking at offering other benefits to anyone involved in our work, such as peer support, training opportunities and records of achievement.

What happens next?

Our payment policy will always be a work in progress. We know it’s not perfect but hope that this current version, which launches today, is a good place to build from as we continue to develop as Co-Production Collective. We will be reviewing it every six months so if you have any feedback for us, please email us on coproduction@ucl.ac.uk.

Thank you everyone!

Finally, we just want to say a big, big, big thank you to everyone who has contributed to the co-creation process. Whether you commented on a draft, attended a session, or shared your learning, this policy wouldn’t exist without each and every one of you and we are really grateful for all your contributions.

We would particularly like to mention two former staff members of the Collective Lizzie Cain and Susan Anderson who spent many many hours working on it, thank you!
